Criminal offences in the United Kingdom as a result of unemployment.

What are you curious about?

Earlier today, when I saw this prompt, I was surprised to see this thought pop up in my mind. I was surprised so I began doing some research on this topic, so I can provide you a summary based on my point of view on this subject.

I know this is a very unlikely topic on this blog, but as much as possible I would like to keep within my niche.”

In the United Kingdom, as I’ve observed, criminal offences and their curious relationship to unemployment have been subjects of concern. When people face joblessness and financial hardships, some might resort to criminal activities out of desperation to survive or acquire wealth.

PS: I used the United Kingdom, as an example as a result of my observation and analysis based on facts and proven research studies. In this light, it doesn’t contradict the fact that it’s not applicable in other countries.

In Chapter 16 of the book on crime and criminality, Patrick Murphy said something that drew my attention, he said;

“…the root causes of crime [are] poverty, unemploy
ment, underemployment, racism, poor health care, bad housing, weak schools, mental illness, alcoholism, single-parent families, teenage pregnancy, and a society of selfishness and greed.”

Patrick V. Murphy (1985) former NYPD Commissioner

However, stemming from unemployment and greed has to be a complex and concerning issue. The intertwining of these factors can create a vicious cycle where the lack of employment opportunities drives some individuals to engage in unlawful activities to meet their basic needs and desires.

Moreover, the allure of greed can be a powerful motivator for criminal acts. When individuals covet wealth and material possessions beyond reason, they might be tempted to pursue illegal means to achieve their goals. This pursuit of personal gain at any cost can disregard the well-being of others and the principles of an ethical society.

In view of this subject, scriptures talk about our behavioural contribution to these effects which includes greed and lack of contentment, and offer profound insights on these topics. In 1 Timothy 6:10, it warns that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. This biblical reference highlights how greed can lead individuals to pursue unlawful means for personal gain, contributing to criminal behaviours.

In the same manner, scripture also teaches about contentment. In Philippians 4:11-12, the Apostle Paul speaks about being content in all circumstances, whether in plenty or in want. This reminder encourages individuals to find satisfaction in their current situations, fostering resilience and preventing the temptation of criminal acts driven by avarice, honouring God’s commandments towards others.

In conclusion, it is essential to address the underlying issues of unemployment and economic disparities to curb criminal offences and foster a more equitable and law-abiding society.
