Why I Chose the University of Wolverhampton

If you are a prospective international student curious about studying at the University of Wolverhampton, I have specially designed this blog series for you with all the details about my journey as an international student living in the UK.🇬🇧

My Journey as an International Student

Dairy of an International Student

I can imagine you must be feeling a mix of excitement and curiosity as you think about studying in the UK. It’s a huge step, but believe me, I’ve been there, and I know the questions swirling in your mind.

And I’d love to walk you through what it’s like studying at the University of Wolverhampton as an international student.

When I started looking at universities, I wanted somewhere that didn’t just offer great academics but also felt welcoming. The University of Wolverhampton stood out for so many reasons.

For one, it has students from all over the world over 100 countries, in fact. That means when you arrive, you’re not alone. You meet people who are experiencing everything for the first time, just like you. From my first day, I could tell how supportive everyone was, from the international team that helped me get settled, to my classmates who quickly became close friends.

And here’s the best part: living in Wolverhampton is a lot more affordable than in bigger cities like London or Manchester, but you still have all the perks of being in the UK. You can hop on a train and be in Birmingham in 20 minutes or take a trip to London in under two hours.

What Programs Can You Study?

When it came to choosing what to study, I was blown away by the range of programs. Whether you’re interested in business, healthcare, engineering, or the arts, there’s something for you here.

I chose my program because of its reputation and the support it offers international students and even job opportunities that come thereafter.

What’s great is they also have foundation courses, which are designed for students who may need extra preparation before starting their degree. And if you’re worried about your English, don’t be.

The university has English language programs to help you improve your skills so you can thrive academically.

You’ll want to explore the programs here on the course page to see what’s right for you.

Campus Life: What to Expect

I was nervous about what life on campus would be like. Would I feel lost? Would I make friends? The answer: Absolutely not.

The university has several campuses, each with its own unique vibe. I’m based on City Campus, which is right in the heart of Wolverhampton, surrounded by cafes, parks, and all the essentials. But there’s also Walsall Campus, which is perfect if you’re into sports, and Telford Campus, where many engineering students hang out.

One of my favorite things about campus life is the library it’s cozy, open 24/7, and a perfect place to focus (I’ve had my fair share of all-nighters there😅) Studying and doing research for assignments and essays…let me not bore you with details.

There’s also a strong community vibe, with student clubs and societies for just about everything. Whether you’re into sports, music, or culture, there’s a place for you. I joined a wellbeing society early on, and it helped me feel at home.

I’d say this is a big part of making the most of your time here getting involved. I made some friends through university events and societies, and it really helps you settle in.

Support for International Students

Before I arrived, I was so worried about all the little details like how to open a bank account, navigate the city, or even get through the first few days without getting lost. But the university’s international support team was incredible.

They offered pre-arrival webinars, so I knew exactly what to expect before I even left my home country. In they webinar they gave instructions and guide saying…

When I land, there would be an airport pick-up service, which is a huge relief when you’re arriving in a new country. They even ran a welcome program (induction) and Open days for both returning and new international students, which gave me the chance to meet other students and get tips on adjusting to life in the UK.

Once you’re settled in, the university offers a lot of academic support. If you ever struggle with assignments or want to boost your study skills, there are usually virtual workshops and one-on-one (drop-in) sessions to help you out. And if life gets overwhelming, they also have wellbeing services, including free counselling for students.

To say the least, the university really does go the extra mile to make sure international students feel at home.

Living in Wolverhampton

Living in Wolverhampton has been one of the most pleasant surprises for me.

It’s a city that’s rich in history but still modern enough to have everything a student needs. From shops and restaurants to parks where you can just relax or study outside when the weather’s nice, it’s got it all.

What’s really awesome is that the cost of living is much lower compared to other big cities. For example, renting an apartment or living in the university accommodation is far more affordable. I’ve lived both on campus and in private housing, and the university offers loads of advice on finding the best option for you.

If you’re worried about budgeting, Wolverhampton is a great place to be plus, international students are allowed to work part-time while studying (up to 20 hours a week during term time), which can help cover living expenses.
