Education (Abroad), Storytelling

Pet Peeves of an International Student in the United Kingdom.

Name your top three pet peeves.

As an international student in the UK, my top three pet peeves have been unpredictable weather, bland food, and complicated public transport systems.

1. The constant shifts between rain, hailstones & sunshine, and now snow…rather caught me unprepared initially, but I’ve learned to always carry an umbrella, always carry a coat/jacket and embrace layering.😅

2. Adjusting to British cuisine has been tricky, but I’ve started spicing up my meals especially when I order a takeaway meal from home and experimenting with recipes from home, which has been both comforting and fun.

However, no matter how much I have tried to embrace British food…nahhhh🙂‍↕️🙂‍↔️ it is just too bland for my taste buds. That is why on a regular basis you will find me cooking and eating my African meals. It’s spicy, tasty and refreshing…and that’s how I like it.

I have also founded my food business on African Cuisine to serve my customers refreshing homemade meals just as they would have it back home in Africa.

3. Also, talk about public transport system especially delayed buses/ trains has tested my patience, using apps like Google Maps and Trainline has made planning journeys smoother.

One of the most outstanding pet peeves for me as an international Black African female student in the UK has to be…

Isolation in Representation

Let me tell you why…

Being one of the few Black students in lectures, seminars, or social spaces can feel alienating, especially when there’s a lack of cultural understanding or diversity in those environments.

This underrepresentation usually lead to moments where you feel like you need to over-explain your culture, face ignorance, or deal with a lack of shared experiences.

Have you ever had such experiences or it just me?

Anyway, finding communities, societies, or groups that celebrate diversity helped bridge that gap and created a sense of belonging.

In summary, I suppose you can say life is all about adapting and finding solutions no matter how complex the situation seems to be right…☺️
