What are your biggest challenges?
I’m answering this again following my blog series “Dairy of an International Student in UK.” (Please catch up on my other related series) That said…,
When I first arrived in the UK, brimming with hope, a Black African young lady ready to chase her dreams. I thought the hardest part would be the weather or maybe the accents.
Turns out, those were the least of my worries.
Being a Black African student here comes with its own unique set of challenges.
At university, I often feel like I have to prove myself twice over once as an international student and again as a Black woman.
The stares, the unspoken questions, the subtle exclusions in group spaces, they’re all part of the package.
But nothing quite prepares you for the workplace. No one tells you about the unspoken battles, the subtle daggers wrapped in politeness.
The racism is quite polite wrapped in smiles and “kind” words.
My part-time job has been an eye-opener, not because of the work but because of the people.
For instance, like I said this job introduced me to a special kind of “polite racism.” I didn’t really notice existed… Oh, they smile, they nod, they ask how my day is only for their actions to scream louder than their words.
I mean, it’s usually the assignments no one else wants to do, you get wooed into…then there is the exaggerated scrutiny over the smallest bit mistake.
At first, I thought I was probably just imagining it. Then I realized it’s probably just their way of saying, “We don’t quite know where to place you.”
It’s exhausting, especially knowing it often comes from the most average, narrow-minded folks who’ve never really left their comfort zones.
I mean, we’re all made in God’s image, right? Don’t you think it’s amusing how dust…yes, dust we both come from and will return one day can still manage to look down on others.
But through it all, I cling to what the knowledge that: “God is my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). That’s my anchor, my light when the world feels dark.
I remind myself that their opinions don’t define me; God’s truth does. Period!!!
And so I keep pushing forward, carrying my faith like a shield.
Because in the end, the question isn’t whether life will challenge you, it’s whether you’ll rise above it.
And my encouragement for you is this…
Don’t let the world make you forget who you are and whose you are.
After all, if God is for us, who can truly stand against us? NOBODY!!!
