What colleges have you attended?
I can’t help but smirk at this question. I mean, really? That’s the question? But fine, let’s play along.
I could give you a straightforward answer, but where’s the fun in that?
No, let me tell you a story instead, a story of discipline, perseverance, and, well, boarding school survival…hence the topic I used for this post…😅
“A Cub in a Den of Lions.” That’s exactly what it felt like being nine years old and thrown into boarding school.
Picture this: a tiny, clueless kid surrounded by seasoned “warriors” who knew every rule, every trick, and every way to make a newbie like me feel small.
It was survival of the fittest
Yes, I started college at nine. Yes, nine.
While most kids my age were still chasing after ice cream trucks, I was dodging seniors in a boarding school. Why?
Because apparently, being “too smart” means skipping primary school classes like they’re hurdles in a race.
By the time I was supposed to be mastering multiplication tables, I was tackling exams meant for kids years older than me.
Did I feel special? Sure.
Did I feel prepared for what the future holds?
Not even close.
Boarding school life for me was quite an experience.
The 5:00 AM wake-up calls, the frantic race to fetch water before someone swiped your bucket, the assemblies where being late was a sin punishable by humiliation, it all screamed discipline.
Oh, and let’s not forget the bullying. Funny times.
But you know what?
It taught me something invaluable…
Perseverance. You don’t survive boarding school by giving up, trust me.
Looking back, every person I encountered teachers, classmates, even the janitors left their mark on me.
They taught me resilience, kindness, and the strength to keep going when life feels impossibly hard.
And for what it’s worth, I’m grateful for that.
But here’s my question to you: Have you been to a boarding school? What’s your “boarding school” story? What experience, however tough, is shaping you into the person you’re becoming? Don’t run from it. Embrace it. You’re stronger than you think.
