When a Phone Runs Your Life: A Cautionary Tale…

Describe an item you were incredibly attached to as a youth. What became of it?

It’s funny how something as small as a phone could have such a massive grip on my life back then.

I mean, let’s be real…teenage me thought my phone was an extension of my soul.

I couldn’t go five minutes without scrolling through social media, posting random thoughts, or checking notifications that barely mattered.

Oh, and the worst part? It started running my life.

I’d burn food while cooking and literally almost burn down the house because I was too busy laughing at memes. My mom would call my name five times, and I’d still not hear her. Honestly, it felt like the phone was the boss, and I was just its obedient little minion.

I remember my mom sitting me down one day with her classic stern-yet-loving tone. “This phone,” she said, pointing at it like it was some evil mastermind, “can either be a tool for good or the thing that ruins your life. Don’t waste your potential staring at a screen.”

Of course, teenage me rolled my eyes because I thought I knew better. But years later, those words hit differently. She was right. That little device wasn’t just helping me stay connected; it was robbing me of real, meaningful experiences.

Fast forward to one fateful day karma, or maybe just irony, decided to teach me a lesson. I was at the pool, and someone casually mentioned that my iPhone X was “totally waterproof” and could take pictures underwater. So there I was, giddy as ever, snapping selfies underwater like a wannabe mermaid.

Spoiler alert: it wasn’t waterproof.

The moment I realized my beloved phone was glitching, my heart sank faster than that phone did in the water. I panicked. I was told to stick it in a bag of rice (or was it oatmeal?) to “dry it out,” but all I could think was, “How am I going to survive without it?”

Let me tell you, those few days without my phone were agonizing.

I felt empty, like I was missing a part of myself. But something amazing happened too I started noticing life around me again. I wasn’t glued to a screen; I was present. I wasn’t obsessing over notifications; I was reconnecting with real life.

That experience taught me a hard truth: I wasn’t just attached to my phone; I was dependent on it. And while it’s still a tool I use daily, I’ve learned to set boundaries. It’s no longer the boss of me. Instead of mindlessly scrolling, I try to focus on meaningful things connecting with loved ones, pursuing my passions, and, yes, living in the moment… ps: I even use my iPad a lot more for that…than my phone…

So here’s my question for you: Is your phone a tool, or is it controlling you? Reflect on it. Maybe it’s time to set some boundaries, step back, and reconnect with life beyond the screen. After all, life’s too short to be lived through a filter.

Take care, and remember you’re more than just your online presence.
