8 Overachieving Things I Do in My Downtime…

What do you enjoy doing most in your leisure time?

Let’s just say it’s a rare commodity, but when it does happen, I squeeze every ounce of joy out of it sometimes chaotically, but always intentionally.

For starters, I love binge-watching movies.

Not just any movies, oh no, I’m not here for mediocre plots and cringy dialogue. To some extent, I kinda consider myself a Netflix connoisseur. Horror? Check. Sci-fi? Absolutely. Educational? When I’m feeling virtuous.

Lately, it’s been AI movies like I, Robot and Subservience because apparently, watching robots outthink humans and wreak havoc is my idea of “relaxation.” Honestly, the writers of these films are so extra. Calm down, Jeff, no one’s asking for a dystopian blueprint. Anyway, they’ve got me thinking way too deeply about technology.

When I’m not mentally wrestling with artificial intelligence, I’m indulging in a favorite guilty pleasure: online shopping. Well, don’t judge me, it’s more like online window shopping.

I’ll pile up my Amazon, SHEIN, and Fashion Nova baskets to the brim like I’m prepping for the Met Gala, only to click “empty basket” because, surprise, surprise, I don’t actually need a sequined blazer. That is, until an important event comes up, and suddenly, I’m convinced my wardrobe is emptier than my fridge after a busy week. Then the panic buying begins.

Speaking of my fridge, cooking is another thing I love doing in my downtime. A couple of days ago, I baked banana bread because what’s more therapeutic than smashing overripe bananas into a bowl and pretending like life is calm? Cooking is my creative playground, where I explore cuisines and mess up recipes that almost work out. It’s fun, though, and the kitchen always smells amazing.

Well, unless I get too excited and overly experimental with spices. Let’s just say, not every fusion idea is a good one.

Now, let’s talk about cleaning because apparently, my idea of relaxation includes scrubbing my apartment like it’s about to be featured on Architectural Digest. A few days ago, I reorganised everything, top to bottom. Is this an ADHD thing, or am I just extra? Somebody tell me because I’m starting to think my brain finds chaos in cleanliness a little too satisfying.

When I’m not cleaning or cooking, you’ll find me writing. There’s something comforting about pouring my thoughts into a diary or planning my next big idea. Budgeting also sneaks its way into my “me time,” though I don’t know how productive I’m being when I set financial goals and end up ordering more groceries than necessary. And don’t even get me started on my newfound interest in painting. I haven’t started yet, but the idea of holding a brush and pretending to be an artsy genius is very tempting.

And then there’s swimming, a leisure activity I used to love when I was back home. These days, it’s more of a nostalgic daydream because British weather and outdoor pools don’t exactly scream “leisure paradise.”

Moving on, I also enjoy traveling even though I so much enjoy the comfort of my home and I usually have pre-travel sickness, when is the date to travel is near, even though yes I enjoy the thrill of exploring new places, hence I’m excited about this year.

Also, I love to dabble in investments.

Stocks, real estate, or just simply watching markets fluctuate it’s all very thrilling in an “I hope this pays off – scream” kind of way.

After all, savings alone don’t cut it anymore. You’ve got to think ahead, right?

Well, there you have it, my slightly chaotic and productive approach to leisure.

What do you think? Am I doing this whole “relaxation” thing right, or do I need to take a page out of your book and learn how to properly chill?

Let me know just don’t suggest yoga. I tried once, and let’s just say, it didn’t end well.
