Leadership Series

Achievers Versus Average

Today as a continuation of my leadership series, I learned something intriguing and decided to share it with you. Stay with me, you might learn from it.

See, I remember sitting in a meeting once, watching two team members react completely differently to the same challenge. One leaned in, asking questions, already brainstorming ways to improve.

The other leaned back, shrugged, and said, “We’ve always done it this way.” That moment stuck with me. It was the perfect picture of the difference between achievers and the average.

You know I like making reference to John Maxwell because I read his books a lot and learn so much from what he teaches and this time he says, “The difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure.” That hit me.

Achievers don’t fear failure they expect it. They treat it as part of the process, not the end of the road.

What Achievers Do Differently

• They see beyond the obstacle. Instead of asking “Why me?”, achievers ask, “What can I learn from this?”

• They stay hungry. Achievers never settle. They know growth is ongoing.

• They act when others hesitate. Average waits for permission; achievers take initiative.

The truth is, we all have the potential to achieve but it’s our mindset that determines how far we go.

I’ve learned that becoming an achiever isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being committed to learning, to failing forward, and to showing up consistently even when it’s tough.

So, if you’ve been feeling stuck or just “getting by,” maybe it’s time to shift your perspective.

What if the only thing separating you from your next breakthrough is how you respond to the challenge?
