Years ago, I worked with someone I just couldn’t seem to connect with. No matter how clear I was, no matter how much effort I put into teamwork, we clashed.
I used to think it was just a “personality difference” until I realized something deeper. I just didn’t understand them.
Here’s the thing, People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
I had been trying to communicate, lead, and even collaborate from my perspective, without ever pausing to understand theirs.
But once I devoted to listening more than always talking, I began to notice things. Their strengths. Their stress triggers. Their motivation.
I adapted how I spoke to them, responded with empathy, and made space for their voice to be heard.
Everything changed. The tension turned into trust. The communication became smooth. Our results got better.
The lesson here was that understanding unlocks connection and connection drives results.
When we take time to understand others what makes them tick, what they care about, how they process life we gain influence.
Not control, not manipulation but the kind of healthy influence that builds loyalty, respect, and momentum.
To grow in understanding of People:
1. Be curious, not critical. Ask questions before you jump to conclusions.
2. Listen more than you speak. People will always show you who they are if you’re paying attention.
3. Remember not everyone sees the world like you do. And that’s actually a good thing.
I will conclude by highlighting that,
Understanding people isn’t just kind, it’s strategic.
