For a long time, I thought being “liked” was the most important part of leadership. Back then, I leaned on my personality my ability to connect, to keep things light, to be relatable. It worked… until it didn’t.
When tough decisions needed to be made, when direction was unclear, people didn’t just need someone nice they needed someone with purpose.
John Maxwell teaches that,
“Your personality might get you in the room, but your purpose is what keeps you there.”
That hit me. I realized I had to stop hiding behind my charm and start stepping into clarity. I had to lead with intention, not just likability.
Here’s what changed for me:
I got clear on my values. Purpose starts with knowing what you stand for. I led with the mission first not my mood. I learned to say hard things in a kind way. Purpose doesn’t cancel personality it deepens it.
If you’ve ever felt pressure to be “on” all the time, this is your reminder: personality is a gift but purpose is your anchor.
Let people connect with you, sure but let them trust your why even more.
