How I Really Use Social Media (And Why It’s Not Just for Posting Cute Selfies)
A few days back, I paused mid-scroll,
Phone in hand, brain on overload.
I asked myself (like a deep philosopher, yes ):
“Why was social media made, no less?”
Was it for introverts, like me, who flinch at doorbells?
Who’d rather text than call—yes, even in farewells?
We live in corners, soft and low-lit,
Avoiding small talk like it’s a bad skit.
But then again, it’s not just for hiding,
It’s for learning, laughing, writing, gliding
Across timelines, posts, and stories that blink,
Faster than I can process or even think.
Yes, I use it – WhatsApp, Facebook, and ’Gram,
Snapchat filters when I feel glam.
I use Threads when I feel poetic,
And Twitter (well, X now) for being unapologetic.
It’s communication, sure, that’s the core,
But connection? Ah… I’m not quite sure.
Because there’s a difference huge, wide, deep,
Between sending a “hi” and a bond that’ll keep.
We exchange minds, not goods but thoughts in trade,
Bits of wisdom in carousels made.
Sometimes it lifts, sometimes it drains,
Like spiritual sugar highs with mental pains.
I learn, I teach, I post, I flee,
Sometimes I just stalk quietly.
But too much of it? Yeah…Nah that’s where it bites.
It slowly steals your sense of contentment and peace.
Still social media’s not all gloom,
It gives my voice a little room.
To write, to speak, to vibe, to share,
And throw my brain into the open air.
So why do I use it? Why do I stay?
Because somewhere, somehow, it brightens my day.
But I’m learning balance – God help me through,
’Cause my soul is more precious than that TikTok view.
And that’s the tea. Or poem. Or rant.
Call it what it is, I’m done, for now.
