Everyday Nerves: What Actually Makes Me Nervous (And How I Cope Without Screaming)

What makes you nervous?

Let’s be honest, when people say “you look so calm,” I laugh internally and externally (depending on how well I know them). Because if only they knew the mental gymnastics I perform every single time I’m about to do something new. Or be seen. Or speak. Or exist under pressure.

Look, I’m that girl who double-checks if her blog post links actually work… six times. Not because I don’t trust Jetpack, but because I don’t trust myself.

What makes me nervous? Oh hun, let’s start with:

• Speaking in front of people (even if it’s on Zoom… from my bed… in my hoodie)

• Submitting an assignment I triple-checked, edited, prayed over, and still somehow feel like I missed the comma that could ruin my academic career.

• Clicking “Publish” on a blog post the same one I loved writing but suddenly hate right before it goes live.

• People saying “Can I talk to you real quick?” Like…why? Am I in trouble? Did I offend you by breathing?

And don’t get me started on group chats especially the ones where everyone’s typing and suddenly stops. The way my heart drops like I just got a bank debit alert.

But you know the one thing that makes me most nervous?

Being misunderstood.

Maybe it’s the overthinker in me or just my deeply rooted desire to make sense (hello, perfectionist alert), but I get quite nervous when people don’t get me.

Still, with time, I’ve learned how to sit with the nerves, make tea, blast some good music in the background, and keep moving. Because life won’t wait, and neither will my deadlines.

So yeah, nerves? I’ve got them.

But courage? I’ve got that too just with a side of sweaty palms and awkward silences.
