I Stayed Silent, And It Echoed
A short true-life story in poetry.
They said silence is golden,
but let me tell you something
sometimes it’s just awkward,
unfair,
and emotionally constipating.
It was one of those days,
a messy Tuesday or a petty Thursday I can’t remember.
What I do remember?
The moment I should’ve spoken.
But I didn’t.
There was tension in the room.
Thick.
Like egusi soup left on the fire too long burnt at the bottom, fake-sweet on top.
There was a misunderstanding,
someone said something sideways,
and the blame… landed on someone who didn’t deserve it.
Me?
I sat there like a mannequin in Primark.
Face fixed. Thoughts racing.
I saw the hurt.
I saw the eyes begging for backup.
But my tongue?
Glued. Tied. Registered under “Mute & Emotionally Overthinking.”
I could’ve said,
“Actually, that’s not true.”
Or even a soft, “I don’t think she meant it like that.”
Simple words.
Nothing revolutionary.
But I didn’t say them.
And in my silence…
I chose the side of the loud and the wrong.
Later, in my shower (because that’s where all deep reflection happens),
I replayed the whole scene.
Line by line.
As if I was prepping for the Oscars.
Telling myself,
“Next time, I’ll speak. Even if my voice trembles.”
What would I do differently?
Everything.
I’d raise my voice,
raise my hand,
heck, I’d even raise my eyebrow dramatically if it helps.
Because choosing to stay silent when someone needed me
that still sits in my chest like an unspoken prayer.
Now, I’ve learned.
Silence can protect your peace, sure.
But sometimes it betrays your values.
