The Day I Finally Chose Me And Didn’t Apologize for It…

They say “self-care isn’t selfish”…

But try telling that to a people-pleaser wrapped in a ‘nice girl’ robe,

Serving smiles while silently screaming inside.

Oh yes, I was that girl—Little Miss Available, Little Miss Understanding, Miss “don’t worry, I’m fine”

…even when I was clearly one text away from a breakdown.

Then one day,

snap.

Oh, not the dramatic movie-style snap,

Just a soft one… like a heart whispering, “Enough.”

It was a regular Tuesday,

and yet, I felt like I’d been carrying the emotional weight of 35 people plus their village people.

There was a phone call I didn’t answer.

A “Can you help me with…” that I politely declined.

A “You should be there” that I confidently ignored.

Why?

Because I needed to be there for me.

Because my body was tired, my mind was stretched,

and my soul had been trying to wave red flags

but I, the loyal soldier, kept marching.

So I drew a line.

Not a dramatic “I’m cutting everyone off” line,

Just a gentle one:

Between me and their expectations,

Between burnout and boundaries.

And guess what?

The world didn’t collapse.

My phone didn’t explode.

Nobody died because I chose rest over responsibility.

Instead—

I breathed.

I journaled.

I prayed.

I felt… peace.

That heavy silence that doesn’t weigh you down but sets you free.

See, the thing is—

For years, I showed up for people who wouldn’t even notice if I disappeared.

I stayed silent when I should’ve spoken.

Agreed when I should’ve walked away.

Gave when my cup was empty and called it love.

But now…

Now, I choose me.

And not in a bitter way,

In a soft, sacred, spiritual way.

Because even God rested at some point,

So why was I out here trying to be a superhero with no cape and no therapy?

I lost a few “What happened to you?” texts.

But I gained peace, clarity, health…

and oh, power.

So yeah—

That was the day I put myself first.

And it’s been giving main character energy ever since.
