When You’re the Odd One Out

Social Exhaustion Explained…

I walk into rooms

where laughter fills the air—

but none of it wraps around me.

I smile, I nod,

I join the circle…

but inside, I still feel outside.

I’m the odd one out.

The quiet one.

The different one.

The one who doesn’t quite “click.”

They don’t mean to ignore me—

but somehow do regardless,

I’m always the forgotten voice.

The extra seat.

The one who takes the group photo,

but isn’t asked to be in it.

And it’s exhausting.

So exhausting.

“I looked for someone to comfort me, but found none.”— Psalm 69:20

People call it being shy.

Or introverted.

Or “just reserved.”

But they don’t see

the emotional weight it takes

to show up

and still feel invisible.

They don’t see

the tears cried in bathroom stalls,

the long walks home replaying conversations,

the overthinking

that makes you wish

you never came at all.

Even if those closest to me abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.”— Psalm 27:10

Some nights, I ask God:

“Why did You make me this way?”

Why do I feel too much,

yet never quite fit in?

Why does belonging feel like

a battle I always lose?

And in that quiet,

God whispers—

“You were never meant to blend in.

You were made to be.”

Made to carry compassion.

Made to feel deeply.

Made to stand apart—

not because you’re not worthy,

but because you’re set apart.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”— Romans 12:2

Maybe social exhaustion isn’t weakness.

Maybe it’s my soul reminding me

that not every room

deserves my energy.

And that’s okay.

So if feel like you’re the odd one out—

the quiet one in the corner,

the one they forget to tag,

the one who always gives more than they get—

know this:

You are not forgotten by God.

He sees you.

He gets you.

And He will never leave you

on the outside looking in.
