Assisting Others

A Short Story of My Unpaid Internship in Kindness…

To be fair, assisting others sounds glamorous until you realize it often comes with no paycheck, no certificate, and sometimes… not even a “thank you.” I used to joke that I had a degree in helping people who forgot my name right after they got what they wanted.

But truth be told, assisting others has shaped me in ways comfort never could.

There was a time I stretched myself thin helping everyone else while my own cup ran dry. You know that type of help where you’re half-asleep, eyes burning, replying “Sure, no worries” even though your spirit is whispering “Sis, no.”

Yeah, that was me. Miss “I’ve got it covered.”

Until life tapped me gently okay, not gently — more like threw me into a lesson that said, “You can’t pour from an empty pot, my dear.”

So I learned. I learned that true assistance isn’t losing yourself to prove loyalty.

It’s serving with joy, not resentment.

It’s helping others rise while staying grounded yourself.

It’s loving people enough to guide, not enable.

And it’s knowing when to say, “I’ll pray for you,” instead of “I’ll fix it for you.”

Now, I help with boundaries.

I assist with wisdom.

And I smile when God uses my little efforts to touch lives in ways I didn’t expect.

Because even when no one claps, Heaven keeps record.

Helping others has taught me patience, purpose, and peace.

It’s not just what I do it’s who I’m becoming.

So, here’s my gentle reminder to you…

Help, but don’t lose yourself helping.

Love, but don’t forget your worth.

Serve, but refill your spirit.
