Today, I came across something in the book I was reading. You know, one of those moments where you’re flipping through pages, half-distracted, and suddenly – BAM – a line hits you like a frying pan to the face. The kind that makes you pause and think, “Okay, why is this book exposing my life like this?”
It said something along the lines of,
“You can’t control what happens around you, but you can always control how you respond.”
Sounds simple, right? Wrong. Because my initial reaction was, “Well, life, could you at least make your circumstances less chaotic? That would make responding much easier, thank you very much.”
But here’s where it gets funny (or painfully real, depending on how you see it). Life throws curveballs at me like I’m some professional batter who’s trained for this.
Unfortunately, I’m not. The truth is that one day, it’s the pressure of deadlines, and the next, it’s someone asking me again why I’m still single, like it’s some terminal illness I should’ve cured by now.
Seriously, can I catch a break? Literally need it…😂
But here’s the truth: as much as I’d love to control every little thing, I’ve learned that my reactions hold far more power than I give them credit for.
When life feels like it’s dragging me through a washing machine on a spin cycle, I’ve got two options: cry about it and let the chaos win, or breathe deeply, recalibrate, and respond with as much grace or sarcasm as I can muster. And yes, I’ve done both.
Here’s a nugget. It’s not just about surviving the mess. It’s about thriving in it. It’s about recognising that while life will test you, how you choose to respond can completely shift your narrative. It’s like holding the steering wheel when the storm hits. Scary? Yes. But also empowering.
So today, I’m asking myself (and you): how are you responding to life’s messiness? Are you letting it dictate your story, or are you taking the pen back?
Remember, you don’t need perfect circumstances to create a beautiful life. You just need the courage to face them and maybe a little humor to keep you sane.
