Competence

I remember the first time I was asked to lead a project I had no idea how to handle. I wanted to say “yes” so badly, but deep down, I knew I wasn’t ready not yet. I didn’t just lack confidence… I lacked competence.

In today’s reading, John Maxwell clearly reminds us once again of something vital which is,

Competence goes beyond words. It’s the ability to do something successfully and consistently.”

It’s not just about talent it’s about trust. People will follow leaders who are not only passionate but capable. And being capable doesn’t mean knowing everything. It means being willing to learn, grow, and show up with an excellence spirit even when it’s pretty hard.

So, I got to work. I asked questions. I made mistakes (lots of them).

But I learned fast, sometimes even the hard way. The more competent I became, the more confident I felt and the more I began to gain trust.

Here’s what I learned about competence:

Consistency builds credibility. Do what you say, and say what you mean.

Learning never stops.

Competent people stay curious and teachable.

Excellence is a habit, not a one-time performance.

Being a leader isn’t about having all the answers it’s about doing the work to be ready when the moment comes. And that kind of competence earns respect.

I hope this keeps you motivated today and always. Hope you enjoy the rest of the week. Cheers.
