Dealing With One-Sided Friendships…
I used to think that loyalty was enough.
That if I showed up, stayed true,
kept checking in, kept caring
that friendship would thrive.
That people would see me
the way I saw them.
But I’ve learned, painfully,
that loyalty doesn’t always echo.
Sometimes it fades into silence.
Sometimes, it’s met with cold shoulders
and half-hearted replies.
Sometimes, it’s invisible.
I was the friend who remembered.
The friend who showed up.
The friend who kept giving
long after it stopped being mutual.
I told myself it was just a phase.
That they were busy.
That I shouldn’t overthink it.
But how long do you keep giving
before you realize
you’re giving to someone
who doesn’t notice you’ve gone quiet?
That’s the ache of a one-sided friendship
it doesn’t break like a romantic relationship.
It dissolves.
Slowly.
Quietly.
Until one day you realize
you’re the only one holding it together.
And that realization stings.
Because you weren’t asking for the world.
Just for someone to ask how you’re doing.
To notice when you disappear.
To care enough to see you.
I’m in that space now.
The space where I question everything —
Was I too much?
Too soft?
Too available?
Too loyal?
But maybe the problem wasn’t me.
Maybe I just outgrew people
who were never meant to grow with me.
So this post is for anyone
who’s ever felt like a background character
in someone else’s story.
Who’s loved loudly and been met with silence.
Let it be known:
Loyalty is beautiful.
But it should never leave you feeling empty.
To anyone reading this,
If you’ve been there — I see you.
If you’re there now — I feel you.
You’re not alone in this.
And just because they didn’t value your loyalty
doesn’t mean it wasn’t real.
Here’s to healing.
Here’s to letting go.
And here’s to choosing friendships
that choose us back.
