The Graduate Route (PSW) Update: What Happens After You Finish Your Degree?

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know that I always tell my beloved subscribers and followers that the degree is the key, but the visa is the door. One of the biggest questions on every international applicant’s mind in 2026 is, “Will I still be able to work in the UK after I graduate?

I’ve done my due diligence to cut through the noise and the TikTok rumors. Having guided applicants from around the world, I know that for many of you, the 2-year Post-Study Work (PSW) visa is the main reason you chose the UK. Here is exactly where we stand in 2026.

  1. The 2-Year “Stay and Work” is Still Here

Despite the many debates in Parliament, the Graduate Route remains a vital part of the UK’s offer to international talent. If you successfully complete your degree at a UK higher education provider with a track record of compliance, you are still eligible to apply for:

  • 2 years of stay for Master’s/Undergraduate finishers.
  • 3 years for Ph.D. graduates.

2. No “Sponsorship” Needed

The beauty of this route which I have explained to hundreds of my global applicants is that you do not need a job offer to apply. It is an “unsponsored” route, meaning you have the freedom to work in almost any job, switch employers, or even work as a freelancer while you build your UK career.

3. The “Switching” Strategy for 2026

Through my work with applicants from around the world, I’ve noticed a shift. The Home Office is now much stricter about when you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa. You can no longer switch “mid-course.” You must complete your degree first. This makes the Graduate Route the essential “bridge” between being a student and becoming a permanent professional in the UK.

Why You Must Plan for the Graduate Route Now

You don’t apply for the Graduate Route until you finish your degree, but the decisions you make today determine if you will be eligible.

  • Did you choose a university with “High Compliance”?

“You must be in the UK when you apply for the Graduate Route. If you leave the UK after your course ends and your student visa expires, you cannot apply from abroad.”
